According to myth, he descended to Rarohenga (the underworld) in pursuit of his beautiful turehu (fairy) wife Niwareka. Her father decorated Mataoroa's skin in theway of the turehu people. Together the lovers returned to the world of the light and the path between the worlds was closed to the living forever.'
