According to myth, he descended to Rarohenga (the underworld) in pursuit of his beautiful turehu (fairy) wife Niwareka. Her father decorated Mataoroa's skin in theway of the turehu people. Together the lovers returned to the world of the light and the path between the worlds was closed to the living forever.'

There she became Hine-Nui-Te-Po (Great Lady of the Night). Portrayed as both the dreaded goddess of the underworld and as a beautiful maiden, she is both a symbol of death and giver of life. It is Hine Titama who lovingly guides spirits on their final journey to Rarohenga.'

A powerful karakia (incantation), makin heavy things light, helped the hero land his mighty catch Te Ika a Maui (The Fish of Maui). The hook has come to represent prosperity, abundance and is a good luck charm when travelling over water.'
